Dementia Care
Pioneer House caters for residents who have challenging behaviours such as wandering. Accommodation is in our two dementia specific areas, one for high care and one for low care. A home within a home, both offer single rooms with ensuites as well as secured outside courtyards.
Staff have had, and continue to receive, extensive education on multiple aspects of behaviour management.
An individual program of activities is developed monthly for our residents in the secured wings as well as being encouraged to join the mainstream activities as appropriate. We try to include a multilayered program of music, exercise, crafts and relaxation.
We also deliver structured sessions combining meditation, relaxation, sensory awareness and guided imagery designed to calm and soothe.

Respite Care
At Pioneer House we are aware that the constant demands of caring for someone can be exhausting. Pioneer House provides a service for carers to assist them and allow them to have a break (respite). Respite accommodation is available in both our mainstream wings as well as in our dementia specific wings.
Residential respite care may be used on a planned or emergency basis to help with carer stress, illness, holidays or if the carer is unavailable for any reason. Again, prior to admission, a current “Aged Care Client Record” (ACCR) is required (refer to “Fees and Entry Requirements”).
All bookings need to be confirmed prior to admission and this can be arranged through contacting our reception.

Palliative Care
The World Health Organization (2003) defines palliative care as:
“An approach that improves the quality of life of individuals and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual”.
At Pioneer House we endeavour to provide relief from pain and other distressing symptoms whilst also affirming life. We combine both the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care and offer a support system to help residents live as actively as possible until death.
Family is important to us, so we offer a support system to help them cope during the resident’s illness and in their own bereavement. Our palliative approach aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with a life-limiting illness along with their families.
Underlying the philosophy of our palliative care is a positive and open attitude towards death and dying. Pioneer House’s palliative approach is not confined to the end stages of an illness. Instead, we provide a focus on active comfort care and a positive approach to reducing the resident’s symptoms and distress.
